Not all of us have lived in situations or made choices that led us to earn a High School Diploma; I am one of those individuals. I completed 9th grade and then life took some turns that kept me from completing high school. This impacted my earning potential, my self-esteem, and so much more. I earned my GED when I was 29 and began classes at TCC to work towards a teaching degree. Eventually, I decided to continue my education and earn two master’s degrees: one in School Counseling and the other in School Administration.
It's not only a passion of mine to help youth find their path to life after high school, but to help adults who, like me, did not complete their high school education. Working as a GED instructor, I help adults take the first steps in creating a path to improve their future. Since we are all at various levels of knowledge and learn differently, my GED course allows individuals to test and only work on the skills they need to pass the tests. Lessons are created based on each student's needs.
I know juggling home, work, and classes as an adult is challenging. I also know taking the first steps to changing our trajectory is scary and it’s easy to find excuses or put it off until life is easier or less busy. I am so glad that I was able to push past my fears and earn my GED. I am no longer a high school dropout. Removing that label from who I, society, and my children, saw me as, gave me the confidence to make more positive changes and set lifelong goals. I want to play a part in helping others remove that label from their inner dialogue and improve their confidence, self-worth, and ultimately, their future.
