This hands-on class guides you step by step to finish a quilt top on a sewing machine. Learn simple techniques for layering your quilt top, batting and backing then quilting and binding. Leave with the satisfying joy of a unique, warm lap blanket you made yourself. 

Prerequisite: Completed lap blanket-size quilt top–either from Intro to Quilting or one that you have already.

Required Materials - estimated $50 or less

  • Backing Fabric (2-3 yards depending on size of quilt top)
  • Batting for size of quilt
  • Basting Glue
  • Thread the color you want to quilt. (white is provided)
  • Binding Clips (not required, but highly suggested)
  • Straight Pins
  • Small Sewing Scissors (for trimming threads)

My quilting began when my sister was expecting her first child. I wanted to create something special for her baby, so I enrolled in a beginning hand-quilting class, followed soon after by a machine-quilting class. Many quilts later, when my brother got married, I decided a wedding quilt would be the perfect heirloom gift. My sister and I appliquéd and pieced together a beautiful design. Really wanted to quilt it myself and that’s when I learned how to use a Long Arm machine—what amazing fun!

For me, quilting is more than just fabric and stitches—it’s the joy of giving. I love seeing the delight on someone’s face when they receive such a meaningful gift. And I love the process itself: quilting is the perfect blend of mathematics and art, patience and love.

My background is in mathematics—I graduated from Auburn University and began my career as a computer programmer for BellSouth. Since then I have owned four restaurants, stayed actively involved in my kids’ schools, and serving in my church and community. Now, three decades later, I’m blessed with three grown, married children and five grandchildren. I've been married for 33 years to Mark, who actively helps with my quilting projects.
