American Red Cross Recertification Lifeguard Training Class

The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. Successful completion results in a two-year certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED.

The pre-test will take place in person on Friday, May 17th starting at 4:30pm. This test is to assess that students meet the prerequisites (see below). The online course will be available after the pre-test and must be completed by April 5th.

The first course of water skills, CPR, and guided discussions will take place at the aquatic center beginning Friday, May 31 to Sunday, June 2 . NO REFUNDS OR NEW ENROLLMENTS AFTER FRIDAY, May 17th. 

In addition, there will be no refunds once the course has been taught. This includes participants who do not successfully complete the course, those who do not attend all scheduled class dates and times, students who do not pass course land and water skills with proficiency (according to American Red Cross requirements), and those who do not pass the written exam. This course is taught with American Red Cross Standards. Class fee includes the American Red Cross Lifeguard online course fee. Enrollment closes May 17th. 

PRE-REQUISITES:

Must be 15 years of age by first day of class.

Must be able to swim 300 yards/meters continuously using freestyle or breaststroke only while demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing.

Must be able to tread water for 2 minutes using only legs.

Must complete the following timed events in 1 minute, 40 seconds:

(a) Starting in the water, swim 20 yards / meters,

(b) Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 - 10 feet, to retrieve a 10-pound object,

c) Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Materials needed for class are:

Swimsuit (one piece for women)

Towel

Change of clothes

Snacks, drinks (no glass containers)

Class size limited to the first 10 students.
